What is a PBX phone system?

PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange. It’s a private telephone network used within a company that enables users to communicate internally and to share external phone lines. It can use different communication channels such as VoIP, ISDN or analogue and be on-premise or hosted.

It’s an ideal solution to reduce your telephony costs as it enables your users to have access to several lines while using the same system instead of having a line for each user. It will also allow you to have more phones than lines. The key features provided include extensions, transfer calls, voicemail and call queues.

A PBX includes a telephone trunk, a computer that manages the switching of calls within the PBX, in and out of it and a network of lines.

PBX phone systems are available as hosted or on-premise solutions.

What is hosted PBX?

A hosted PBX delivers all the features of a PBX phone system (voicemail, conference, transfer…) while eliminating the installation, operation and maintenance costs. It generally uses the VoIP technology (Voice over IP) via an internet connection but can also use the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). It offers:

-Flexibility: it can be scaled up and down as you wish, perfect for fast-growing businesses!

-Mobility: it can be accessed from anywhere, ideal for remote workers!

-Easy to set up and manage: you can add new extensions, numbers and users with ease, no need to be a telecom engineer!

-No initial costs: as a hosted solution doesn’t involve buying any hardware, you won’t have any installation or maintenance costs. You only need to choose your contract and you’re good to go! A flat monthly fee will be charged.

What is On-Premise PBX?

An on-premise PBX requires on-site installation of PBX hardware within the businesses’ premises. It offers more control over your phone system as you will be able to set up to your exact requirement and make changes at any time. Although the initial costs are higher than with a hosted solution, it will work out considerably cheaper in the long run.

Owning the hardware will give also give you the ability to integrate other software such as CRM and you will own all your data and settings. It is an ideal solution for any company that has the infrastructure to support and host their own phone system or network.
